How to Teach Kids with Artificial Intelligence
AI apps can help kids create new kids of stories.
When we (parents) use AI, it feels magical. It is novel. We never had this when we were growing up. When kids use AI, it is just a storytelling tool for them. They even use it more intuitively than we do.
Here are some of the ways we have used AI with our kids.
We used ChatGPT to generate a one minute script. My son gave the inputs and out came a pretty convincing story about a magical iPad. We inputed the story text into Eleven Labs and generated the AI narration using one of the default voices. Then we generated the images using Midjourney. And I assembled the timeline of images in Premiere Pro. Check out the resulting video:
In another project, we used Studio D-ID to turn our portrait photos into speaking avatars. When my son trained the algorithm on his voice, the resulting video looked like a real video even though it was generated using AI and a selfie photo. You can pick which regional accent you want or train it on your own voice.
We used Runway ML to quickly take away the background using the green screen feature and put in its place a moon image generated from Midjourney. The result was a short and very amusing music video showing my son dancing on the moon.
The video project of the magical iPad was the biggest hit as the kids all wanted their own video movie too. Can you imagine as a kid, you know you have access to tools that can be used to make your own movies?
I would recommend trying out some AI tools with your kids as you will be showing them a glimpse of the future. If you choose the video project, they will learn how to iterate quickly on art direction, edit scripts and know when to green light the final product.
AI can fuel even more creativity, building on top of the creativity that children naturally have. They won’t even need you around to help in future projects as they can self-direct their own learning with the help of their AI-assistant.
